Yiddish Book Center 2011-2012 Fellowship Program

"The Yiddish Book Center is now accepting applications for its 2011-2012 Fellowship Program! Application deadline: January 3, 2011. The Fellowship Program brings talented young college graduates who are passionate about Yiddish language and culture to spend a year as full-time Book Center staff. Fellows provide content for existing programs and spearhead new ones. Fellows work in a number of areas, including:

  • Books & Collections —identifying and organizing the Yiddish books in the onsite depository and in the Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library
  • Education & Outreach —developing onsite and online opportunities for education in Yiddish language and culture
  • Oral History & Ethnography —collecting, editing and curating stories and cultural artifacts of Jewish life

Continuing education in Yiddish language, literature and culture are part of the Fellow experience.

Past Fellows have done important work, including:

  • Launching the Wexler Oral History Project
  • Curating the Book Center’s permanent exhibition on Yiddish literature
  • Developing an online Yiddish course
  • Creating customized tours of the Book Center
  • Compiling an inventory of rare Yiddish books

The program runs from September 2011 through August 2012. Each Fellow receives a stipend of $28,000 plus health insurance.

Applicants should be recent college graduates with strong backgrounds in Jewish studies or related disciplines, a working knowledge of Yiddish, and demonstrated interest in Yiddish language and culture.

  • A resume
  • Academic transcripts
  • Three letters of reference (including at least one from an academic instructor and at least one from a professional supervisor)
