JOB: Associate or Full Professor Hebrew and Yiddish, City College of New York

The Division of Humanities and Arts at The City College (CCNY) of the City University of New York (CUNY) announces a major expansion of its Jewish Studies program, aided by a generous gift from Michael and Irene Ross. We invite applications for two positions: a senior hire (Associate or Full Professor) for the Michael and Irene Ross Chair in Hebrew and Yiddish and a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor.

The successful candidates may represent any discipline or field connected to Jewish Studies; the faculty appointment will be to the appropriate department.

One of the hires will be for a faculty member whose specialty is the ancient, medieval, or early modern worlds.

Preference for at least one hire in Sephardic or Mizrahi Jewry.

Applicants for the Ross Chair must have competence in both Hebrew and Yiddish; applicants for the Assistant or Associate Professor must have competence in at least one of the languages relevant to Jewish communities, such as Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, Judaeo-Arabic, or others.

The positions begin Fall 2013.

The Division of Humanities and Arts encompasses eight departments and includes internationally-distinguished professors. The faculty collaborate in interdisciplinary programs at the college and provide students with a high-level liberal arts education. Associate or Full professors may be able to teach and advise Ph.D. students in the doctoral program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Minimum qualifications include Ph.D. in related discipline by start date and commitment to teaching, research, and program service.
