In Geveb - online journal of Yiddish Studies seeking Managing & Assistant Translations Editors

MANAGING EDITOR FOR TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS

In geveb, the online journal of Yiddish Studies, seeks a part-time (12-16 hours per week) Managing Editor to coordinate the Texts and Translation section for the 2016-2017 academic year.

The Managing Editor will be responsible for coordinating the submission, review, editing, and publishing process of translations for In geveb. The Managing Editor will be part of the core editorial team for In geveb, comprised of the Chief Editor and two to three Managing Editors, which oversees all of the day-to-day work of the journal. They will also work with In geveb’s full editorial board, who help to read and evaluate translation submissions. The Managing Editor will therefore have an important leadership role in the journal as a whole and will be asked to be engaged with all sections of the publication as well as with the administrative and organizational work of the journal.

The ideal candidate will have excellent Yiddish as well as experience translating from Yiddish and be knowledgeable about Yiddish literature and culture. Editorial experience with English language publishing is a plus. The Managing Editor must be organized and able to manage their own work, often juggling multiple projects, as well as become a part of the team effort that produces the journal.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend biweekly online meetings of the core editorial board, annual editorial board meeting at the AJS, and meetings of working groups and the board of directors as necessary
  • Communicate with contributors about submissions, review process, and publication
  • Oversee the review process of translation submissions and personally review submissions as necessary
  • Participate in editing accepted translations and preparing them for publication, including typing the original Yiddish texts and working with the English and Yiddish copy editors
  • Upload translations to backend of CMS and assist with other uploading as needed
  • Assist with In geveb’s social media presence on Facebook and Twitter
  • Participate in other sections of the journal and other organizational work as necessary, including reading and advising on submissions to other sections, soliciting submissions, working with the editorial board and the board of directors, participating in fundraising and events, etc.

Skills:

  • Confident in Yiddish speaking and writing, experience translating from Yiddish, experience with YIVO transcription a plus
  • Experience editing English language materials
  • Must be organized and able to self-manage
  • Experience working with Google Drive
  • Experience working in a CMS (bonus points for Craft), using BaseCamp and MailChimp a plus
  • Good digital communication and teamwork skills; In geveb’s editorial board lives all around the world and we work through email and video conferencing.
  • Flexible schedule a plus

Position can begin as early as July 1, 2016 and lasts for one year. Approximately 12-16 hours a week. $8,000 to $11,000 stipend, to be determined by the successful applicant’s time commitment and final responsibilities.

ASSISTANT EDITOR FOR TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS

In geveb, the online journal of Yiddish Studies, seeks an Assistant Editor (5-8 hours per week) to assist in the review and editing of translations from Yiddish, including typing and proofing the Yiddish original works, for theTexts and Translation section in the 2016-2017 academic year.

The main responsibility of the Assistant Editor will be to transcribe Yiddish texts for publication alongside their translations. This process involves standardizing the original texts according to YIVO standards (see our translations for examples). The Assistant Editor will also assist in proofing and editing translations that are accepted for publication, as well as occasionally reviewing translation submissions.

The ideal candidate will have excellent Yiddish as well as experience translating from Yiddish and transcribing or transliterating Yiddish, and be knowledgeable about Yiddish culture. Attention to detail, capacity for independent work, and familiarity with using Google Drive are all essential skills for this position, as the editor will work remotely and all work is done online. The Assistant Editor will work closely with the Managing Editor for Texts and Translations. This position is an opportunity to gain experience with translation and editing, as well as to become involved with the core editorial team of In geveb.

Position can begin as early as July 1, 2016 and lasts for one year. Approximately 5-8 hours a week, to be determined with the successful candidate. $3,450 to $5,500 total stipend, to be determined by the successful applicant’s time commitment and final responsibilities.
