Leyenzal.org is an educational resource for readers and students of Yiddish. From the website:
"Welcome to the Leyenzal! We are an online educational resource for readers and students of Yiddish. Every two weeks, users are able to download an excerpt of a novel, a story, or a selection of poems along with an original Yiddish-language lecture about the text. Our goal is to encourage active readership by making this incredible body of literature more accessible. Our lecturers include some of the most sought-after educators, researchers, and activists in the world of Yiddish today. Our readers include individuals, khavruses (learning partners), and reading groups who engage with our materials all around the world.
The Leyenzal is TED Talks meets Sholem Aleichem’s Di yidishe folksbiblyotek. We are bringing Yiddish literary studies into the 21st century through digital social media. Users can read the texts and watch the lectures in their browsers, or download these materials for on-the-go reading, viewing, and listening.
What’s more, with the exception of these few pages in English, all of our materials are entirely in Yiddish. The reasons for this are twofold. First, because our lecturers reside in North America, South America, Israel, and Europe, Yiddish truly is the only lingua franca shared by all of our contributors. Second, we believe that immersing oneself in spoken Yiddish is the best way to understand literary Yiddish. Most of the Leyenzal’s lecturers are native speakers who represent a wide variety of regional dialects. Students interested in honing their language skills can benefit just as much from hearing lessons by contemporary scholars (and from the discussions at the bottom of every post) as they can from reading. We are, of course, happy to answer questions and receive your feedback in languages other than Yiddish (including English, Hebrew, and Russian). Please direct your messages to founder and webmaster Isaac Bleaman (isaac@leyenzal.org). For more information on programs for learning Yiddish, please visit this page.
Leyenzal – A Yiddish Literacy Project was incorporated in California in 2012 and is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the US. While all of the Leyenzal’s materials are freely available to users, we do pay our lecturers honoraria for their video lessons. We rely primarily on users to help cover these expenses.
