Comprehensive Yiddish-English Dictionary online

This is the online version of the English translation of the famous Dictionnaire yiddish-français by Yitskhok Niborski and Bernard Vaisbrot

The printed version is available from Indiana University Press.

From the website:

In 2002, Yiddish lexicography took a step forward with the publication of the Dictionnaire yiddish-français by Yitskhok Niborski and Bernard Vaisbrot. But for students of Yiddish not fluent in French, using this dictionary requires looking up the definitions in a French dictionary.

Now we are proud to annouce that an English version of this dictionary is now available from Indiana University Press.

The on-line version of the dictionary is now available.

Features

  • Broad coverage of Yiddish words of all origins: Hebrew-Aramaic, Slavic, and Romance as well as Germanic.
  • More words, and more idiomatic usages than in previous Yiddish-English dictionaries.
  • More user-friendly, without the complicated abbreviations and signs found in older works.
  • Many regional and dialectal variants are included alongside standard literary Yiddish forms.

Please be advized that this is not a free resource: there is a fee structure in place based on the amount of looked up words (there is a limited free monthly quotum).
